I’m sure that walking around the city, or in some getaway near Valencia, you have noticed not only the great amount of trees that surround us, but also their beauty and magnitude. The Comunidad Valenciana is the autonomous region with the most protected monumental trees in the whole country. These trees are distinguished from others because they stand out for their size, shape, age, origin or attractiveness and, for this very reason, are protected by regional institutions.
According to Luis Gomis, the general director of the Natural and Animal Environment, the Valencian Community has very ambitious regulations regarding the criteria for the protection of these specimens. For this reason, ein Valencia we have about 2,500 trees of this type, most of them being carob and date palms.
Facing next year, 181 new specimens have already been identified , which will become part of the catalog of these protected species in 2025. This new update will imply an increase of 6.5% from the last version approved in 2023.
In addition, with these new measures to protect the arboreal heritage, not only will help conserve our biodiversity, but also they are key to working against global warming.
