The Valencia City Council has begun the installation of the 278 cameras that will control the accesses to the Low Emission Zone designed to progressively reduce pollution in the city.
So far, the Mobility Service has placed 33 cameras in various locations, including General Avilés Avenue, the underpass of the same avenue with Doctor Peset Aleixandre Avenue, Mestre Rodrigo Avenue, and other strategic areas such as Pla de la Saïdia and Cid Avenue. In addition, 18 additional cameras have recently been installed at points such as Alfauir-Germans Machado, Bilbao street, and Serradora street, among others.
The objective is that by the end of August, Valencia will have 81 operational cameras, moving towards the goal of 278 cameras by the end of the year.
These devices are capable of capturing license plates in any light condition, contrasting them with the database of the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) to verify the environmental label of each vehicle. However, they are equipped with technology to ensure the privacy of drivers, blurring faces and license plates of vehicles that do not violate the rules.
The implementation of the EPZ will be carried out in phases, starting in 2025 with an informative stage without sanctions. Effective restrictions will begin in January 2026, limiting access to A-label vehicles from outside the province of Valencia. By January 2027, the limitation will be extended to all unlabeled vehicles from outside the city, and from January 2028, the restrictions will be total.
