As part of the centenary of the birth of María Beneyto, one of the most outstanding writers of contemporary Valencian literature, the Valencia City Council has announced the creation of a literary route that will cover the key places of her life and work in the city.
This initiative joins a series of cultural activities designed to pay tribute to the prolific author, known for her poetry and novels in both Spanish and Valencian.
The route, which will have 12 marked points in different locations in Valencia, will include plaques with QR codes that will provide information about the importance of each place in Beneyto’s life and literary career.
From the Department of Cultural Action and Cultural Resources, they frame this proposal in the existing literary routes of authors such as Vicent Andrés Estellés, Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas and Marc Granell.
The tribute to María Beneyto is not limited to the literary route. The City Council has organized workshops, exhibitions, and the reprinting of some of her most outstanding works, such as El río viene crecido, which portrays Valencia after the flood, and the publication of the unpublished novel Evelia 25.
In addition, the municipal libraries will host the workshop Desconocer la primavera: leer y escribir a María Beneyto, taught by the writer Mar Benegas, to delve into the literary and personal milestones of the author.
The libraries will also offer spaces dedicated to reading recommendations and a traveling exhibition created by the Valencian Academy of Language (AVL), consisting of 12 panels highlighting key moments in Beneyto’s life and work.
This exhibition, which will be inaugurated on February 20 at the Municipal Historical Newspaper Library, will travel to different parts of the city throughout the year.
The bibliographic collection of María Beneyto was deposited in the Municipal Historical Newspaper Library in 2011, and is a centerpiece of this tribute. This archive includes literary works, photographs, personal correspondence, literary reviews and unpublished documents, such as the novel Al límit de l’absurd.
Among his outstanding works are Criatura Múltiple, which received the Premi Valencià de Poesia, Antigua Patria and Bressoleig a l’insomni de la ira, awarded the Catalan Poetry Critics’ Prize in 2004.
