No need for a car: these towns in Valencia and Castellón are perfect for viewing the eclipse, and you can get there by train or bus

With less than a week to go before the first total solar eclipse in 120 years, many are still looking for the perfect spot—or at least the most accessible one—to view the astronomical event of the century.

The Valencian Community is one of the luckiest autonomous communities on this occasion, as the total eclipse will be visible in more than 280 municipalities: those in the northern half of the province of Valencia and throughout the entire province of Castellón .

A phenomenon that will coincide with sunset, creating a unique spectacle that has drawn tens of thousands of people to our country, filling tourist accommodations throughout the northern third of Spain.

Faced with the risk of traffic gridlock and concerns about potential wildfires,the Valencian Regional Government has banned access to natural parks and forested areas, limiting the opportunity to view the eclipse to urban areas or the nine officially designated viewing spots.

Among these locations are some of the country’s most privileged towns and sites for enjoying this event, such as Aras de los Olmos and Macastre Castle. However, getting to most of these towns can be difficult or impossible if you don’t have your own vehicle.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide so you can see which towns will experience the eclipse for a longer duration than in the city of Valencia itself—and which are easily accessible by public transportation.

Towns and Municipalities in Valencia and Castellón with Excellent Visibility of the Eclipse (and How to Get There)

Depending on the exact observation point, the solar eclipse will begin its partial phase between 7:36 p.m. and 7:39 p.m., and will reach totality around 8:30 p.m. and 8:34 p.m. in most Valencian towns. It will be at that moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s disk.

The duration of the peak phase will also depend on location: up to 1 minute and 40 seconds in the northern parts of Castellón and just 9 seconds in areas closest to the southern edge of the total visibility zone in the province of Valencia. This is a very significant difference in duration, which justifies traveling to other parts of the region.

In the city of Valencia, the eclipse will last exactly 1 minute, but there are two drawbacks: its eastern geographical location (the easternmost tip of the peninsula) and the presence of buildings and obstacles that may hinder viewing. In the list below, we’ve ranked by duration the municipalities where the eclipse will last longer than in the city and which have direct public transportation access.

Keep in mind that the sun will be very low in the sky, and it won’t be visible from every location within these municipalities. Be sure to find a spot free of obstructions such as buildings, trees, or hills. The weather forecast (AEMET) indicates that the sky will be mostly clear, but don’t forget to check the weather report that same morning.

If you’re looking for a tool to ensure you’ll have a clear view of the eclipse from your chosen location, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has launched this eclipse viewer to help you check how it will appear at a specific location or set of coordinates.

Don’t forget to protect your eyes with ISO 12312-2:2015-certified eclipse glasses; looking directly at the sun without proper protection can cause irreversible and irreparable damage. Experts advise against removing your glasses at any time, except at the peak of the eclipse—when the moon completely covers the sun—for a maximum of one minute. After that time, it is absolutely necessary to cover your eyes again to prevent damage to the retina.
