While much of the Valencian Community suffers sweltering temperatures in the heat wave, the municipality of El Toro (La Nava), in the interior of Castellón, has recorded a minimum of 8.7 ºC in the last hours, according to data from Avamet, the Associació Valenciana de Meteorologia Josep Peinado.
The weather station of this small mountain village, located at an altitude of 1,481 meters, confirms it: it has become a real thermal refuge for those fleeing the extreme heat.
The difference with other parts of the region is abysmal: while in coastal and flat areas the minimum temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees, in El Toro it is possible to sleep covered even in August. Its maximum temperature yesterday, Sunday, August 10, barely reached 18.9 ºC, a radical contrast with the more than 35 ºC recorded in much of the country.
Other municipalities have also enjoyed cool nights. Bocairent (Rambla de Mariola) recorded a minimum of 11.3 ºC, Xixona (Rambla de La Sarga) was 12.4 ºC and Casas Bajas recorded 12.8 ºC.
These towns, all of them in inland areas and with a certain altitude, share the privilege of offering almost autumnal dawns in the middle of summer.
In an August marked by record temperatures, these corners of the Valencian Community remind us that there are still places where summer is experienced with cool nights and the silence of the mountains as a backdrop.
