There are few places that embody Valencian culture as well as Sueca, where Sundays are for eating paella with the family, rice is grown in the fields of La Marjal , and the Fiestas Mayores are held at the end of August.
Every year, before school starts again and as a farewell to the summer vacation, Sueca puts together a packed schedule of concerts, fireworks displays, food festivals, and a wide variety of activities for all ages. This year, the festival schedule kicks off on August 28 with a giant paella to be shared among residents and visitors, and will conclude on September 13 with the 65th edition of the International Valencian Paella Contest—the oldest and most prestigious competition dedicated to this traditional dish—followed by the rice parade.
But it’s not all about food and drink; Sueca celebrates its festivals in a big way with a new edition of Espiga Rock, which this year once again sets the standard for music in Valencian and features a lineup including CabraFotuda DJ, Naina, Ginestà, the legendary Pep Gimeno “Botifarra,” and the festival’s highlight: La Fúmiga in one of their final concerts before their announced retirement. There are very few tickets left for the August 29 event, but if you don’t make it in time (or it’s not your style of music), you’re sure to enjoy the free tribute shows to Nino Bravo, Estopa, Mecano, La Oreja de Van Gogh, and Melendi.
Of course, fireworks also play a prominent role in the town’s festivities, and we’ll be able to enjoy the traditional mascletà at the Mare de Déu de Sales on September 8 and a cordà on Ciutat de Pamplona Avenue on September 5.
