In the heart of Ciutat Vella, there is a street with a name as short as its route. Did you know that the street in Valencia with the shortest name is related to a tree? Only two letters make up the official name of Carrer de l’Om, the demarcation that holds the title of being the shortest in the city in reading, but perhaps also in route.
And this tiny street in the Mercat neighborhood, the antithesis of san Vicente Street which refers to the elm tree, is besieged by squares and monuments in the center of Valencia that make it go unnoticed. The street is located in the vicinity of the Lonja de Valencia and a few meters from the Plaza del Dr. Collado, this street is a silent witness to the bustle of locals and tourists who populate Ciutat Vella.
According to the official list of streets of the Valencia City Council, Om is the only street composed of two letters. The Valencian dictionary refers to Om as a “deciduous tree of the Ulmaceae family(Ulmus minor), with ovate and serrated leaves, small greenish flowers and fruits in samara, found spontaneously or planted in the riparian forest”.
A street that in the simplicity of its name establishes a point of connection between urban life and nature.
