This week, the new Valencian Inclusion Income (RVI) went into effect—a benefit ranging from 790 to 1,620 euros per month intended for families or individuals who have trouble meeting their basic needs and making ends meet.
This benefit has been in place in the Valencian Community since 2017, and currently more than 56,000 people receive it, but it has been completely overhauled. Now, the RVI is administered by the regional government, has been adjusted to the current cost of living, includes a supplement of up to 30% for rent or a mortgage, and is compatible with a salary for up to 12 months.
The update to the eligibility criteria does not mean that current recipients will lose their benefits or become ineligible; rather, the criteria for new applicants have been expanded.
The base benefit starts at 793.80 euros per month for a single person and increases gradually based on household size, up to a maximum of 1,247.40 euros for families of six or more members. These amounts can be increased by up to 30% if the recipient has a valid rental agreement or mortgage.
In addition, receiving the RVI certifies beneficiaries as individuals in a situation of social exclusion, which entitles them to other benefits such as free prescription medications, a full school lunch subsidy, and full coverage for textbooks and school supplies.
