Nowhere else on the planet does a region embrace pyrotechnics and fireworks quite like the Valencian Community. From Herbers, north of Castellón, to Pilar de la Horadada, on the border with Murcia, talking about gunpowder, explosions, and fire has a much more pleasant connotation than in the rest of the world.
Every year, hundreds of towns across the Valencian region celebrate their festivals and culture with massive mascletàs, fireworks displays, and shows that leave locals and visitors alike in awe, but very few (if any) come close to the scale of the Nit de l’Albà in Elche.
A magical fireworks display that is part of the town’s patron saint festivities and that this year will break its own record with 2,900 kilos of fireworks set off. A spectacle that will culminate with the traditional Palmera de la Virgen, an explosion of light that soars over 300 meters and is considered the largest fireworks “palm tree” in the world.
This year, the fireworks display will be organized by Pirotecnia Ferrandiz, which will set off around 90,000 fireworks on Thursday, August 13, at 11:15 p.m. in the area surrounding the Basilica of Santa María.
Elche August Festivals: Schedule and Events
Although the Nit de l’Albà is one of the highlights, Elche’s August Festivals are among the largest cultural celebrations in the entire Valencian region. Concerts, parades, mascletàs, and religious events—notably the Moors and Christians festival, designated a Site of International Tourist Interest.
