Traditions, like fine wine, improve with time, and in Valencia we have some that date back so far that their earliest records are handwritten on leather scrolls. These documents are treasures in their own right and further enrich the region’s rich history—and, in this case, that of the millennia-old city of Xàtiva.
On August 17, 1250— 776 years ago— James I of Aragon signed the Royal Charter granting Xàtiva the right to hold an annual ten-day fair. This document attested to the economic, political, and cultural importance of one of the most historic municipalities in the entire Valencian Community—a fact that the residents of Xàtiva continue to commemorate every summer as they prepare for their fair, one of the oldest in Europe and recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
And 2026 will be no different: the Fira d’Agost de Xàtiva kicks off on Friday, August 14, and concludes on Thursday, August 20, though the organizers have been holding events since July 25. More than 100 activities are spread across six different venues, combining traditional elements (such as the historic Livestock Fair) with more contemporary ones (such as concerts and sports competitions), and catering to all audiences, from the youngest to the oldest.
As is customary, every day at 2:00 p.m., a mascletà will be set off in the Jardín de la Paz, and two fireworks displays will be launched: on August 14 following the opening ceremony and on August 20 following the closing ceremony.
Several concerts will be held featuring renowned artists such as Cali y el Dandee, La Fúmiga, and OBK, among many others. But if you prefer something more traditional and historic, there will be two nights of different “albaes” in the early morning hours.
