The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will be the first visible from Valencia in over a hundred years, and the City Council has launched a special operation to ensure the safety of the thousands of visitors and residents expected in the city that day.
As part of this initiative, the municipal agency València Sostenible will distribute free, certified solar viewing glasses, at a rate of one pair per person, while supplies last.
The glasses can be picked up at two municipal locations: the Oficina de l’Energia and the Observatori del Canvi Climàtic (Calle Doctor Lluch, 60). No prior registration is required: simply visit either of the two centers during their regular business hours.
Who is guaranteed to receive a pair of glasses
Those who are already registered for any of the free summer activities organized by València Sostenible will receive their glasses without having to make a special trip. This includes participants in Estiu DiverActiu —the family-friendly program of workshops, games, and environmental activities that takes place in different neighborhoods throughout July and August—and attendees of the Oficina de l’Energia’s workshops on energy conservation, self-consumption, and home energy efficiency.
A safety operation coordinated by Civil Protection
In addition to distributing glasses, the City Council has activated a comprehensive plan approved by the Local Civil Protection Board that will coordinate the services of the Local Police, Fire Department, Civil Protection, medical teams, sanitation crews, and public transportation in anticipation of the expected large crowds. The total phase of the eclipse will occur at sunset, placing the astronomical spectacle over the Valencian coastline.
Authorities remind the public that viewing a solar eclipse without proper protection can cause irreversible eye damage, and that only glasses specifically approved for solar observation should be used. Conventional sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection.
