The Abastos Sports and Cultural Complex in Valencia is closing its doors this Tuesday, June 30, to begin a comprehensive renovation—the first major project at the facility since its opening in 2003.
The work will be fully funded by the new concessionaire, with an investment of more than 8 million euros. There is still no estimated completion date for the work.
The complex’s concession had expired in 2018, a situation that, according to the Valencia City Council, has affected the quality of service provided to users over the past few years.
On April 17, 2026, the Governing Board approved the award of the new concession contract, which includes both the renovation of the center and the pool, as well as the provision of sports equipment.
Measures for users during the closure
The City Council has planned measures to ensure that season pass holders can continue using the facility during the construction period. Those who can prove their status as users at the time of closure will receive priority registration when the complex reopens.
In addition, all members who wish to continue practicing sports at another municipal facility during the closure will be eligible for free registration at centers directly managed by the Municipal Sports Foundation—such as the El Carmen Sports Center—and at some indirectly managed centers, including the Nou Moles Sports Center, the Patraix Sports and Cultural Complex, and the Benimàmet Sports Center.
New Concessionaire and Construction Timeline
Management of the complex will be entrusted to SUMA Fitness Club, the company that currently operates the Valencia Swimming Pool. In addition to taking over the operation of the facility for the coming years, this company will be responsible for financing and carrying out the comprehensive renovation.
Rocío Gil, Valencia City Council’s Councilor for Sports, noted that the award of the concession was approved in April and pointed out that the project brings an end to a situation that has lasted nearly a decade without a valid contract for one of the city’s leading sports facilities.
