Valencia will expand the city’s bike lane network by 2025 with a new 3.2-kilometer project that will run through 6 neighborhoods in the south of the city.
With a total budget of 2.65 million euros, 90% financed by European Next Generation funds, this project will run through the neighborhoods of Arrancapins, Patraix, Favara, La Raïosa, Creu Coberta and Sant Marcel-lí.
The project, born from the DecidimVLC 2017 participatory budgets and developed by Consultora Valenciana de Ingeniería, contemplates four main actions:
A 1,200-meter bi-directional bike lane will be built on Gaspar Aguilar Avenue between Plaza de Jesús and Doctor Tomàs Sala. This section will later connect with the bicycle lanes of Jesús street, Jeroni Munyós-Beat Nicolau Factor, Llanera de Ranes and Tres Creus – Doctor Tomàs Sala.
This bike lane will run segregated along the roadway next to the sidewalk, between the sidewalk and a curb parking lane.
In this avenue it is planned to reorganize the traffic lanes, maintaining two lanes in the direction of Doctor Tomàs Sala and reducing to one lane the direction towards Campos Crespo. Also, the pedestrian space in the area will be enlarged, accessibility will be optimized and two new crosswalks with traffic lights will be installed.
In Sant Vicent Màrtir street, a 1.6-kilometer section of the roadway will be separated from the west sidewalk and will connect Mestre Sosa with Doctor Tomàs Sala. It will connect with the bike lanes of both roads, and with those of Giorgeta and Dolores Alcaide. As in Gaspar Aguilar, traffic will be reorganized.
A 300-meter bike lane will be added to link with the La Rambleta cultural center along the Doctor Tomàs Sala service road. This action will take the form of a segregated lane on the road, between the north sidewalk and the battery parking area, in the section between Sant Marcel-lí and Pius IX.
On Joaquín Navarro street, another 300-meter bike lane section has been planned to connect this road with Sant Vicent Màrtir, starting at Carters street. It will be bi-directional and will be segregated along the roadway next to the south sidewalk.
It is estimated that the bike lane will be operational within 7 months, although some sections may be available within 2 months. Specifically, 7 months of work are planned for Gaspar Aguilar, 5 months for Sant Vicent Màrtir, 2 months for the Doctor Tomàs Sala service road, and 2 months for Joaquín Navarro.
According to the councilman of Mobility, Jesús Carbonell, the project has been designed with the aim of minimizing the loss of initial parking spaces by relocating to nearby streets such as Pintor Agrassot, Bolivia and Juan de Garay, among others.
In a statement, the Valencia City Council specifies that the section between Carters and Santiago Suárez “Santi” square, parking will be rearranged: the parking will be in battery, while in the rest of the street up to Sant Vicent Màrtir the parking area will be arranged in cordon.
