Valencian students will have five libraries in 2026 that will be open 24 hours a day during exam periods.
Valencia City Council has put out to tender the security contract that will allow five centers in the city to operate uninterruptedly, including weekends, for a full month during each exam period.
This measure, which responds to a long-standing demand from the Valencia Youth Council (Consell de la Joventut), will be implemented in five facilities distributed throughout the city to ensure territorial coverage.
The libraries selected for this first year of the contract (2026-2027) are:
- Benimaclet: Carola Reig Library.
- Patraix: Azorín Library.
- Arrancapins: Eduard Escalante Library.
- Beniferri: Joan de Timoneda Library.
- Sant Marcel·lí – Camí Real: Clara Santiró i Font Library.
The extended hours will be in effect during two key periods in the university and school calendar: from May 15 to June 14 and from December 10 to January 10 of the following year. During these weeks, the centers will remain open at all times.
The council has allocated a base tender budget of €136,599.70 per year to cover the surveillance and security services necessary to keep these facilities open at night. The contract has an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of two years.
José Luis Moreno, Councilor for Cultural Action, stressed that this is a “pilot project” that could be extended to more centers in the future.
The councilor has framed this initiative as part of the drive to promote the library network, which also includes the hiring of new staff and the procedures for the future Malvarrosa library.
