It has been several years since the first announcement of the arrival of Costco, the U.S. hypermarket chain, in the city of Valencia. However, on the site where it should already be operational, there is still no sign of the multinational company. The opening, originally planned for 2024, has been delayed for a number of years but progress is gradually being made.
The last one, last January, when the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente, Agua, Insfraestructuras y Territorio published the change of use, from industrial to tertiary, of the land located next to Heron City Paterna, where this American giant is expected to be installed.
As reported by Levante-EMV the previous conditions of buildability and access to be met by the future tenant of the plot were impossible to assume. After 14 years with an empty site and without the promised arrival of Ikea, for whom this land plan was originally conceived, the rezoning will allow for a smaller commercial and office area.
The buildable area has been reduced by more than 42%, from 179,468 square meters to 103,932 square meters and now contemplates an extension of the streetcar line T4 and eliminates the need to undertake two crossings over the CV-35 (one lower and one upper).
The mayor of Paterna himself, Juan Antonio Sagredo, also shared the news in social networks last January.
Now, according to levante-EMV as of July 2024, the city council has approved the sector’s detailed planning and will soon open the documentation to the public with a view to opening the hypermarket in 2025.
Costco is expected to have a surface area of approximately 15,000m2, with an investment of 100 million euros and 250 jobs.
How Costco works
The U.S. multinational already has a presence in Seville, Getafe, Las Rozas and Sestao. After its fifth opening in Spain this summer, the Zaragoza store, Valencia is expected to be the next, along with Malaga and Asturias.
In this center you will be able to buy all kinds of products in large format: from food to household appliances, electronics, jewelry, spare parts for vehicles, audiovisual equipment, beauty and furniture.
Costco has more than 800 stores in 13 countries around the world. Its main feature is that in order to make purchases, it is necessary to become a member and pay an annual fee of 36.3 euros (for private customers) or 30.25 euros (for companies and self-employed workers).
