The shift from summer heat to extreme rainfall in a matter of days—or even hours—is, unfortunately, becoming increasingly common in Valencia. The State Meteorological Agency ( AEMET) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in the inland areas of the province of Valencia and the southern inland areas of the province of Castellón.
This alert, which takes effect at 3:00 p.m. today , September 28, will be upgraded to an orange alert in the northern inland areas of Valencia and the southern inland areas of Castellón from 12:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29. The southern inland areas of Valencia will be removed from the alert status starting at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.
The most critical period will occur early this morning due to the possibility of severe thunderstorms and torrential rain. Meteorological and emergency services have issued the warning due to the possibility of heavy rainfall occurring in very short periods of time.
Forecasts warn of rainfall that could reach 40 liters per square meter in just one hour and hit 100 liters per square meter in some areas. This situation could lead to sewer system overload, flooding of public roads, and, in the most extreme cases, rising water levels in rivers and ravines.
This is expected to result in a slight drop in maximum temperatures, though no major changes are anticipated. On Wednesday, calm conditions will return, but starting Thursday, October 1, a new period of rain and thunderstorms is expected to begin, which could last up to six days.
In light of the forecast for rain and possible flooding, authorities are urging the public to drive with caution and avoid any unnecessary travel on roads and in flood-prone areas.
