Valencia is bracing for extreme weather this weekend. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts episodes of heavy rain and storms throughout the Valencian Community, with particular focus on coastal and near-coastal areas.
The intensity of the storm will depend on where this cold air mass (DANA) ultimately discharges, although current forecasts indicate that rainfall could reach between 100 and 200 liters per square meter, with torrential downpours that could exceed 300 l/m² over the sea.
The Valencian Regional Government’s Emergency Services has issued a special alert to all municipalities in the Valencian Community, with particular attention to those at highest risk of flooding, urging them to activate preventive protocols and closely monitor the situation. Civil Protection also urges citizens to take precautions and plan their weekend activities in light of the weather forecast.
How long will this DANA last?
The weather is expected to worsen beginning Saturday afternoon, October 17, when storms will begin to form throughout the Valencian region, with particular attention to the southern half of the province of Valencia.
However, it will be on Sunday when the rainfall reaches its peak intensity and will continue through Monday, although forecast maps indicate that showers and residual rain may also occur on Tuesday, the 20th.
Temperatures Plunge: Goodbye to the Summer Heat
The rain event will also bring a drastic drop in temperatures and put an end to the summer heat that continues to prevail in the Valencian Community despite it being mid-October.
The drop in temperatures will begin on Saturday in the northwestern part of the peninsula and will spread to the Valencian region on Sunday. Highs in the city of Valencia will drop from between 24°C and 27°C to around 20°C, with lows around 15°C, while in inland areas of the province, temperatures will fall below 10°C.
However, the AEMET and emergency services recommend that the public stay informed about the weather report due to the unstable and dynamic nature of this phenomenon. Citizens are urged to check the various official channels, especially if they plan to travel.
