Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana has called for a symbolic work stoppage at 1:00 p.m. this Friday, July 3, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the accident that occurred between the Plaça Espanya and Jesús stations, in which 43 people died.
The pause, agreed upon jointly by FGV management and the workers’ union representatives in Valencia and Alicante, will affect all trains and trams in service at that time, on both the Metrovalencia and TRAM d’Alacant systems.
Each train will stop at the station it is passing through at that time, in memory of those who died and were injured in the accident.
An institutional tribute throughout the Valencian Community
Commemoration of the tragedy will not be limited to the rail stoppage. The flags at the Palau de la Generalitat and at regional government buildings throughout the Valencian Community will fly at half-mast for 24 hours.
In addition, the Consell plenary session will observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims.
The accident on July 3, 2006, which occurred on the section between Plaça Espanya and Jesús, remains—two decades later—one of the greatest tragedies in the history of Valencian public transportation, in which 43 people lost their lives after a train derailed at the Jesús station.
