In late January 2027, the Valencia City Museum will host what will be the largest collection of works by Joaquín Sorolla ever exhibited in the city: more than 200 pieces from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library in New York.
Although the works were originally scheduled to arrive this summer, they will ultimately be received throughout the month of November, and the exhibition will open two months later.
The project is part of the agreement signed by the Valencian Regional Government and the Valencia City Council with the New York institution. The Regional Ministry of Education, Culture, and Universities delegated the comprehensive management of the arrival and exhibition of the collection to the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana (CMCV).
The most comprehensive collection of Sorolla’s works outside of Spain
The Hispanic Society’s collection brings together works by Joaquín Sorolla spanning from the late 19th century to the final stages of his career, making it the most comprehensive collection of the artist’s work preserved outside Spain, both in terms of its stylistic diversity and its chronological continuity.
According to experts, its heritage value lies not only in the individual quality of each piece but also in the coherence of the collection as a whole, which allows for a reconstruction of the Valencian painter’s artistic evolution.
Transportation: The First Operational Step
The next step in bringing the collection back is to organize the transportation process from New York to Valencia. To this end, the CMCV has issued a public call for bids for the contract to transport the works , with a budget of 404,236.80 euros, which includes the tasks of packing, pickup, transportation, and delivery of the pieces from the Hispanic Society’s headquarters in New York.
The transport will be carried out in several staggered shipments, in compliance with safety protocols and the conditions required by insurance companies. These conditions include climate control, anti-vibration protection, and escorting the works throughout all phases of the journey.
