The Polytechnic University of Valencia has positioned itself as the second institution with the most patents in Spain, only surpassed by the CSIC, according to the latest report of the Patent and Trademark Office.
In the recent document on patent applications in Spain during 2023, the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) has stood out as the university with the highest number of patents registered, with a total of 31 applications. This achievement places the UPV in second place nationally, behind only the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), which tops the list with 50 patents.
This recognition underlines the UPV’s leadership in innovation and technological development, surpassing other academic institutions and important companies in the country. Only one individual applicant, with 30 patents, and other entities such as the Andalusian Public Health System and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, which shared the fourth position with 25 applications each, came close to the volume of patents registered by the UPV.
The report also highlights that within the top twenty positions in patent applications, SEAT, S.A. and Telesforo González Maquinaria, S.L.U. are the only companies, occupying the ninth and nineteenth place, respectively.
The Valencian Community ranks second nationally in terms of the number of patents registered by autonomous community. With a total of 184 applications, the Valencian Community is positioned just behind the Community of Madrid, which leads with 274 applications.
University patents are, on many occasions, the prelude to the creation of public or private start-ups to apply this technology outside the academic world.
