The weather is giving the province of Valencia no respite. While a red alert for extreme heat was issued yesterday with highs of up to 44 degrees, today the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Valencian Community Emergency Service have issued an orange alert for possible thunderstorms with hail and strong gusts of wind.
The probability of thunderstorms in Valencia and the surrounding area is 70%, with up to 40 or 50 liters of rainfall per square meter in just one hour. The storm could be accompanied by winds exceeding 80 kilometers per hour, so it is especially important to drive cautiously and follow the instructions of the authorities.
Although the heat index and temperatures will drop slightly, the yellow alert for high temperatures remains in effect, with highs of 36 degrees, and a yellow alert has been issued for coastal phenomena related to strong winds.
A combination of adverse weather conditions that makes forecasting extremely difficult and points to another day with sudden changes in the skies, especially between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
These drastic changes are due to a combination of factors that are occurring much more frequently than usual this summer: the humidity and water vapor from the previous hot days clash with the arrival of a new mass of cold air, causing the vapor to condense violently and creating large storm clouds in a very short period of time.
Closure of parks and suspension of outdoor activities
The Valencia City Council has announced the immediate closure of all parks, gardens, and cemeteries in the city starting at 12:00 p.m. This measure also affects the special markets, which have had to close early at 1:00 p.m. All outdoor activities organized by the Municipal Sports Foundation have also been suspended.
Authorities recommend avoiding non-essential travel and not walking through wooded areas or recreational areas near the boardwalk.
