The City Council of Valencia has presented this Wednesday Metrominuto, the first map of the city that shows how long it takes to walk to any central point of the city.
The tool, inspired by the subway maps of large cities, presents in a graphic and simple way the estimated times of journeys on foot to promote a culture of sustainable mobility, details the consistory in a statement.
In this first phase, Metrominuto València includes three different maps: a general one with key urban points and rail and subway connections, another focused on the historic center with tourist information, and a third one specific to the old Turia riverbed, which shows 53 distances and times between different locations.
“The next step will be to develop maps by districts,” the Valencia City Council points out.
According to Mobility data, 50% of trips in Valencia are made on foot. Metrominuto seeks to “de-dramatize the walking culture” and show that most of the urban trips can be solved in just 10 or 15 minutes.
The initiative originated in Pontevedra in 2011, when the first Metrominuto was created within a pedestrian mobility laboratory. Since then, the Walking Cities Network, made up of more than 90 municipalities and provinces and representing some 10 million people, has promoted this tool in different locations.
