It’s been 17 days since Spain was crowned soccer world champion for the second time in its history, but we still get goosebumps remembering Ferran Torres’ goal in the 106th minute. A goal that, along with the controversial “Make Spain Great Again” cap, his vacation in Ibiza with Marcos Llorente, and the famous “Oh Ferran”—the most viral audio clip of the summer—has made him one of today’s most iconic soccer players.
This international recognition has not gone unnoticed in his homeland, and the Valencian Regional Government has chosen to reaffirm it by naming Ferran Torres “ambassador and face of the Valencian Community.”
The President of the Consell, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, will welcome the Valencian forward this Friday at 12:00 p.m. at the Palau de la Generalitat, where they will sign a collaboration agreement to promote the region. This recognizes his effort, humility, resilience, and pride in his roots as core values of the Valencian Community.
We don’t know if Ferran will take advantage of his trip to Valencia to visit the Oceanográfic, home to the gray shark named in his honor.
Ferran Torres, Honorary Son of Foios
But even more emotional will be his return to his hometown, Foios. There, they’ve organized a massive tribute to bestow upon him the town’s highest honor: naming him an Honorary Son in front of his neighbors and family. The event will take place this Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the Plaça del Poble, in front of the Foios Town Hall, where hundreds of people are expected to gather.
The other Valencian World Cup champion, Alejandro Grimaldo, will also be honored; he is expected to visit his hometown of Pobla de Vallbona soon to receive the municipality’s Gold Medal.
