The Valencia City Council will install a large floral carpet in the Plaza de la Mare de Déu this Thursday. The structure will measure 80 square meters and feature more than 320 kilograms of fresh flowers.
The visual motif of this year’s display will celebrate the 325th anniversary of the completion of the paintings on the basilica’s dome, the work of Baroque artist Antonio Palomino.
The tapestry will bring the rich imagery of the church’s interior into the public space through three distinct levels.
The upper band will display the city’s coat of arms. The central area will show an exact recreation of the dome as seen from the ground, featuring God the Father, God the Son, and the Virgin Mary among angels.
The lower section will feature a 3.5-meter-tall figure of the Mare de Déu dels Desemparats.
Technicians will use species such as chamomile, bloodroot, lavender, snapdragon, sunflower, carnation, cypress, and rose petals to create the work.
The company Decourba has designed this piece using the traditional technique of adhering botanical material to wooden panels.
The final installation will be divided into 40 modules measuring two by one meter, which will fill the plaza with a rich fragrance during the celebrations of the Day of the Mare de Déu.
