Valencia continues to make progress on the Manises Airport expansion project. Aena announced this morning a call for bids on a 41.6 million euro contract to renovate and improve the runway, along with other existing infrastructure.
Although this project does not involve any expansion of the airport’s footprint or lengthening of the runway, it is a first step toward modernizing the infrastructure with the goal of streamlining flight operations and enhancing safety.
The work on the runway will involve correcting unevenness, resurfacing the pavement, improving the drainage system for days of heavy rain, and replacing the current lights with LED lights that offer greater visibility. Renovation work will also be carried out on the runway layout, and the design of some taxiways will be reconfigured. Finally, the road surrounding the airport will be rehabilitated, and new sections will be built to facilitate the movement of internal vehicles used for surveillance, security, or maintenance.
Nighttime airport closure and flight rescheduling
To carry out some of the more significant construction projects, the airport will implement nighttime operational closures between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Although this time slot sees the least air traffic, it will be necessary to reschedule some flights or divert them to alternative airports.
These nighttime closures will not occur daily during the 27 months the work is expected to last; they will be adjusted based on the needs of the renovation and coordination with the airlines. Work is scheduled to begin in May 2027 and be completed in July 2029.
