Few things stir up more excitement in this country than cheesecakes. Many of us listen intently as the waiter recites the dessert options until he utters the three magic words: “cheesecake”—and from that moment on, the decision is made.
But social media has expanded the reach of this dish to unimaginable heights: viral recipes, specialty shops, and even dessert gurus. The cheesecake craze is here to stay, and the best cure is events like the one kicking off today, October 28, in Torrent: The Cheesecake Cup.
For five days (October 28 through November 1), the plaza at the Unió Musical in Torrent will be filled with food trucks and food stalls, with cheesecake taking center stage. Seven bakeries are competing to see who has the best cheesecake in Spain.
Pistachio cheesecakes, Happy Hippo, and Mercadona cereals
Admission is completely free, and all servings cost six euros. Each bakery or pastry shop presents two cheesecakes in two different categories: one classic and one innovative; in total, there are fourteen options to choose from and vote for your favorite. From among all the votes cast at the five stops on the tour, one winning cheesecake will be chosen per category.
Among the selection of cheesecakes, we find flavors and preparations of all kinds: made with goat cheese, buffalo sarró, Kinder Bueno, pistachio and kataifi, Dinosaurus cookies, white Filipinos, Happy Hippo, and even Mercadona’s milk-based cereal.
But it won’t all be sweet: the venue also features a “savory zone” with pizzas, hamburgers, sandwiches, wraps, and french fries. The food festival will also feature live music and DJ sets to extend the after-dinner gathering with friends or family.
