Oscar nominations, interviews in international media, and sold-out movie theaters: “La Bola Negra” has become the cultural phenomenon of the year in our country, and for many, the film’s 155-minute runtime has left them wanting more. Fortunately for those who are left wanting more, with the centennial of the Generation of ’27 just around the corner, many theaters in Valencia have added several plays by the “protagonist” of this story, Federico García Lorca, to their schedules.
This Saturday, October 17, the Teatro Carolina kicks off the first tribute to the poet from Granada since the film’s premiere: “Sangre,” a modernized and free adaptation of the classic “Blood Wedding,” offers a take on how Lorca might view the 21st century, the social context, and the role of women.
The Flumen Theater will also pay tribute to the poet with its“Federico García Lorca Recital”: an intimate event featuring recitations of some of the artist’s most notable works. The event will take place on Saturday, November 7, and admission is free, though seating is very limited.
The La Rambleta Theater included the play*Poet (Lost) in New York* in its 2027 schedule to mark the centennial of the Generation of ’27. Written and performed by Jesús Gómez, the play is based on the poems and letters Lorca sent during his stay in the United States and explores the author’s innermost thoughts to reveal his most intimate and personal side. However, an exact date for this performance has not yet been set.
But if you’re looking to see the film for the first time or relive the experience, it has been available since September 25 at most of the more than 80 movie theaters in Valencia, and—due to the production’s success—it is expected to remain in theaters through March 2027.
